VPAC announces 2024 Dance Series schedule

Tickets for dance, classical and holiday shows are on sale now at vilarpac.org

Dance is visual art in motion and, this winter season, audiences will have a chance to see three dance performances on the Vilar Performing Arts Center stage that will mesmerize, including a brand-new work commissioned in part by the VPAC.

“Dancing is an innate sensation to all of us, a natural expression of our humanity,” said VPAC Executive Director Cameron Morgan. “Watching a live dance performance is a moment than transcends language and connects us through movement. This winter at the VPAC, our audiences can expect to be moved by the artistry of the three wonderful companies during our winter dance series. Watch as these incredible artists use their physical form to express stories, emotions, and our collective existence through dance.”

The 2024 VPAC Dance Series includes:

Alonzo King LINES Ballet: Deep River
7 p.m. Jan. 14 | Starting at $78 (students are $25)
Celebrating over four decades of evocative dance, master choreographer Alonzo King’s unique artistic vision adheres to the classical form — the linear, mathematical and geometrical principles deeply rooted in the East-West continuum. The company will perform King’s newest creation, Deep River, a collaboration with composer Jason Moran and vocalist Lisa Fischer. Bending the lines between classical and contemporary ballet, he draws on the strengths of his extraordinary dancers, altering the way we look at ballet today.

MOMIX: Alice
7 p.m. Jan. 28 | Starting at $55 (students are $32)
Seamlessly blending illusion, acrobatics, magic, and whimsy, MOMIX sends audiences flying down the rabbit hole in Moses Pendleton’s newest creation, ALICE, inspired by Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice in Wonderland. “I don’t intend to retell the whole Alice story” Pendleton says, “but to use it as a taking off point for invention.” Join this dazzling company on a mind-bending adventure, as Alice encounters time-honored characters including the undulating Caterpillar, a lobster quadrille, frenzied White Rabbits, a mad Queen of Hearts, and a variety of other surprises. Filled with visual splendor and startling creative movement, Alice reveals that nothing in MOMIX’s world is as it seems!

BODYTRAFFIC: Bolero by Fernando Hernando Magadan (March 22)
7 p.m. March 22 | Starting at $58 (students are $25)
In pursuit of the most challenging, original, and diverse choreography in the field, Los Angeles based BODYTRAFFIC has made waves from coast to coast with its far-reaching appeal. Artistic Director Tina Finkelman Berkett leads a masterful troupe, all nimble interpreters of each choreographers’ distinct vision. With Bolero, Spanish choreographer Fernando Hernando Magadan sets this reimagining of Ravel’s goliath orchestral work on a company known for its bold, enigmatic presentation. This new work is commissioned in part by the Vilar Performing Arts Center.
