| ABOUT STATE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA OF RUSSIA: Friday, January 21, 2011 - For over 70 years the State Symphony Orchestra of Russia has been one of the leading orchestras in Russia, representing one of the basic reference points of musical life for the people of both Moscow and Russia as a whole. . The State Orchestra of the USSR was founded in 1936 by decision of the Government and led by the legendary Alexander Gauk, a brilliant interpreter and phenomenal educator.The Orchestra became the first independent symphony orchestra to present the music of the Soviet Union to foreign countries, with the first foreign tour taking place in 1956 in Poland and Romania. In the late 1950’s the orchestra reached the American continent with a two-month tour that ended with a concert in New York's Madison Square Garden in front of an audience of sixteen thousand people.
