TEATRO LIRICO D’EUROPA PRESENTS
Puccin's Turandot

Teatro Lirico D'Eurpoa presents Puccinis Turandot at the Vilar Performing arts center in beaver creek colorado

ABOUT TEATRO LIRICO D’EUROPA:
Tuesday, February 15, 2011 - Teatro Lirico D’Europa was born in 1988, the brainchild of former ballet star Yves Josse and opera singer Giorgio Lalov. They toured Europe for seven years to great critical success, later setting their sights on touring the company in America. Winter 2000 saw the first major American tour, and the company has been thrilling audiences from Boston to Beaver Creek ever since. Past VPAC appearances include “La Traviata,” “La Bohème,” “Carmen,” “Tosca” and “Aida.”

ABOUT PUCCINI'S TURANDOT:
Puccini's last masterpiece Turandot, the opera that salutes the power of love, was left unfinished at his death.  The plot is rather melodramatic, but it is this melodrama that inspires some of the most heart-rending arias ever written.

In Peking's Imperial Palace, the Princess Turandot refuses to marry any suitor unless he can solve her three riddles. Each suitor will forfeit his very life unless he answers correctly. Still, many princes vie for her hand in marriage because of her astonishing beauty, but they all fail. Calaf, son of the exiled King Timur, is struck with Turandot's beauty, and ignoring protests from his father and Liù his devoted slave girl, who would go to any lengths to protect her master whom she loves more than her own life, he matches wits with the princess. He figures out her riddles, but the real question lies in whether he will win her heart? Calaf offers his life to Turandot if she can discover his secret name. Searching the city in vain, the princess finally tortures Liù, driving her to suicide. Faced with Liù's sacrifice and Calaf's stern devotion, Turandot crumbles, and weeping in Calaf's arms, she declares that his secret name is Love.
